The World Diabetes Congress from the International Diabetes Federation

The Challenges

State-of-the-art organisation of all social events and hotel bookings for 10,000 people.
Tailor-made supporting programmes including 14 tours and excursions showcasing Dubai and UAE's cultural treasures.
Management of IDF's social events and protocol: opening ceremony, networking event in a typical Bedouin camp in the desert and an evening with the IDF President attended by 2,000 participants.
Ensuring that all delegates were transferred in a smooth and timely manner in luxurious air-conditioned coaches and cars from the airport to selected hotels. Setting up meeting rooms and hospitality desks in hotels. Availability of a Meet & Greet service to assist with airport formalities.
Preparation, planning and organisation of exhibition and sponsorship sales across the entire MENA region. Management of all the technical aspects of the exhibition (stand building management as well as sourcing and management of local staff).
Competitive and service-orientated solutions in response to a large number of last-minute requests for visa and hotel booking changes.
A +18% increase in exhibition sales space and +22% in overall congress attendance compared to 2009.

The Tools

Experienced project management team and additional temporary staff.
Operational team of more than 100 for the airport and city.
Customised web system to accommodate hotel, tours, visa and transport booking online.
Reliable resources and expertise of the PCO. Ability to manage mega events with perfection and proven track-records.

The Verdict

Largest congress ever held in Dubai and organised by CSI. Recognition of the event from the highest level within the Dubai Government.
Successful cooperation between CSI, the Dubai World Trade Centre and all the industry stakeholders.

The Results

Showcased how Dubai is ready to take on any size of congress due to its state-of-the-art congress infrastructures (DWTC) and service providers (CSI).
Scientific and medical interests of the congress had gone beyond politics focusing on the human element at the centre of Dubai Government's agenda.

Venue : Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre
Project Type : Biennial congress
Delegates : 15,100 delegates
Date : 4th-8th December 2011

The first time the World Diabetes Congress had been held in the Middle East and Africa. The key aim to create a platform that allowed key players to take up the challenge of giving a voice to millions of people living with diabetes made up a significant opportunity to exchange information about diabetes across the region.
